The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has urged state governments to boost their response as Lassa fever cases continue to rise across the country.
In a recent statement, the agency stated that “the rise in infections is being recorded in several states”, raising concerns about the disease’s spread, particularly during the dry season when outbreaks are more likely.
The organization advised nations to increase surveillance, assure early discovery, and offer appropriate treatment to sick individuals. It also emphasised the importance of raising public understanding about how the disease spreads and how to prevent it.
Lassa fever is primarily spread by contact with food or household goods contaminated by rats.
To avoid exposure, health officials recommend that Nigerians practise proper hygiene, store food carefully, and keep their environments clean.
The NCDC further advised anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, weakness, headache, or bleeding to seek medical help right once, since early treatment improves chances of survival.
The agency assured the general public of its commitment to support states with financial and technical assistance, but emphasised that stronger action at the state level is critical to limiting the outbreak.
