The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has acknowledged a power outage in areas of Lagos State as a result of a fire on the Lekki-Epe Motorway.
In a statement, the business blamed the disruption on an accident involving a moving car and a stationary petrol tanker, which started a fire and caused substantial damage to essential energy infrastructure.
According to EKEDC, the incident seriously damaged the Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders, destroying vital conductors and overhead line components and cutting off power to many villages.
“Please be informed that the current outage resulted from a fire incident that occurred last night after a vehicle collided with a stationary petrol tanker,” according to the business.
“The fire severely damaged the Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders, including vital conductors and overhead line equipment. Our technical experts are now working to replace the faulty components and restore power as soon as safely as possible. “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” the message continued.
The outage has affected villages served by the Medallion feeder, including Medallion Company, as well as Sangotedo, Majek, Fidiso, Awoyaya, Container, Eputu, Lagasa, Losoro, Kajola, and Onisan, which are all connected to the Ibeju 33kV feeder.
The event occurred immediately after a gas explosion in Lagos’ Ajah axis earlier Saturday, which reportedly killed two people and caused severe damage to warehouses and roadside shops near the Tera Ahmed bus stop in Sangotedo.
Residents in impacted areas have been asked to exercise caution as repair efforts continue, with the distribution firm stating that power would be restored as soon as it is safe to do so.
