Opposition parties recently met in Ibadan and decided to back a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election; the Accord Party, however, has denied being a part of this agreement.
This is stated in a statement made by Mukhtar Abdallah, the party’s national secretary.
The party’s name and logo, he claimed, were utilised without authorisation. It wasn’t just an oversight; the episode was characterised as political mimicry.
According to reports, members of several groupings, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), were present at the conference in Ibadan.
Near the end of the meeting, they declared their intention to run a united front in 2027 against APC President Bola Tinubu.
However, Professor Chris Imumolen’s Accord Party has denied being affiliated with such organisations. It was adamant that it was against using its identity at the conference.
The party stated, “This is not an oversight; it is a misrepresentation,” stressing that it would not be coerced into any coalition that it was not willing to be a part of.
The party also raised concerns about the coalition’s trustworthiness, stating that it was disturbing that it would borrow the name of an unaffiliated party.
They made it clear that they intend to field their own presidential candidate in the 2027 election.
The statement emphasised that the Accord Party is committed to the 2027 general elections and would not be treated as an afterthought in a coalition that was formed in a hurry.
Meeting planners have 48 hours to justify the unauthorised use of the party’s name, according to Imumolen. If they do not reply, he threatened legal action.
The party has made it clear that it will not tolerate the use of its name or platform for personal benefit and that it is prepared to protect its autonomy.
