Since January, the NDLEA has apprehended 289 individuals and achieved 52 convictions—Mitchell

According to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), 289 individuals in Edo State have been apprehended on suspicion of drug trafficking since January 2026.

At this year’s celebration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, held in Benin City on Friday, June 26, 2026, this was revealed by Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the State Commander of the agency.

Under the banner of “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” the gathering took place.

Among the 289 individuals apprehended, Ofoyeju reported that 176 were men and 113 were women.

He went on to say that 52 people were found guilty, with 47 men and 5 women doing time.

In addition, he said that 35,008.38 kg of cannabis were confiscated.

The state commander of the NDLEA reported that 14,705.31 kilograms of cannabis was confiscated from dealers, while 20,303.07 kilograms was destroyed on cannabis farms.

He went on to say that 33 anti-drug abuse sensitisation programs were run, reaching 6,092 participants, and that 135 people, 101 men and 34 females, who had drug misuse problems, were counselled.
