A young guy, Abubakar Haruna, in Potiskum, Yobe State, perished in a vehicular accident while participating in a bridal procession celebration.
The catastrophe that transpired on Friday has rekindled apprehensions regarding the hazardous behaviour of youngsters during social events in the community, as a contingent of young men accompanying a bride operated motorcycles in a perilous and aggressive fashion in a congested area of the town.
An eyewitness, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), stated that the riders operated at excessive speeds, executed perilous manoeuvres, and shown scant consideration for pedestrians or other road users.
The report stated that the deceased’s brother, Muhammad Haruna, verified the occurrence, indicating that the situation rapidly escalated into tragedy as the convoy neared a congested area.
Haruna elaborated that his brother was positioned by the roadside when one of the riders struck him forcefully on the head. He expressed regret that the impact caused Abubakar to lose his equilibrium before tumbling into an adjacent drainage channel.
He asserted that prior to any assistance being rendered, he had already succumbed to the injuries incurred.
He stated, “Abubakar Haruna’s demise is tragic, abrupt, and wholly avoidable.”
The deceased’s brother remarked that the tragedy was not only distressing for the family, but also “an occurrence that should never have transpired.”
Muhammad stated that reckless riding during bridal conveyance celebrations has gotten prevalent among the youth in the region, noting that each celebration now features perilous motorbike exhibitions that endanger innocent individuals.
He urged the authorities in Yobe State to implement more stringent safety measures and enforce current traffic laws, emphasising that failure to act promptly may result in the loss of other innocent lives due to negligence and indiscipline.
