Joe Igbokwe, a social media commentator and leader of the All Progressives Congress, has said that certain individuals are exploiting the detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to extort funds from others.
Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 20, 2025, after being convicted on all seven counts of terrorism brought against him.
The Biafra independence fighter was subsequently incarcerated in Sokoto prison, where he is anticipated to serve his sentence.
There has been widespread unrest, particularly from the South East, advocating for the release of the secessionist.
In a Facebook post on Monday evening, Igbokwe asserted that IPOB members and certain solicitors are profiting off Kanu’s incarceration.
I have seen that certain unrepentant scammers in Igboland, IPOB fraudsters, and some charge-and-bail lawyers are exploiting the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu for financial gain.
