Violent crime appears to have returned to Anambra, as gunmen whose names were not immediately determined attacked members of the Anambra State Police Command, killing at least two.
The state has been calm for months after a major crackdown on criminals, particularly gunmen posing as Biafra agitators, until Sunday night’s event.
The incident occurred along Awa-Ndiukwuenu-Ufuma Road, where it was said that the guys approached police officers on patrol and shot at them, leaving two bodies on the main road.
A keke operator on the road last night who observed the incident said he was riding along when he suddenly heard gunfire ahead, leading him to ditch his tricycle and flee into the jungle for protection.
In a voice message, he stated: “After some time, I came out of the jungle, grabbed my Keke, and resumed my trek, eventually arriving at the location where the incident occurred.
“Two police officers are laying on the road here, and their police van is parked by the roadside.
I decided to record this voice note and share it on the site because I believe one of the police officers is still alive, and anyone who knows police authority will tell them to go and save their comrades,” the distressed keke rider said.
As at the time of posting this story, no official police reaction had been issued regarding the occurrence.
