Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters officers, working with community youths, apprehended two suspects in connection with the rape and gruesome murder of Wendy Achumba, a 21-year-old nursing student at Mercy College of Nursing Science in Umulogho, whose lifeless body was discovered in her off-campus residence in Umuadara, Umulogho, Obowo, LGA, Imo State.
In a press statement, Imo Police spokesperson Henry Okoye named the two suspects as Onyema Okonkwo, 32, and Emmanuel Onyekachi, 25. Both are natives of the community where the alleged crime occurred.
Okoye stated that the two individuals were apprehended as a result of prolonged, intelligence-led investigation operations by Division operatives working in collaboration with Community stakeholders.
During the investigation, the suspects admitted that they had raped her several times before killing her.
Okonkwo, one of the suspects, claimed in his confession that the victim recognised their faces and that, in order to cover the crime, they went after her life, striking her with a stick and a machete.
According to Okoye, the suspects have been sent to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet and comprehensive investigation, and they will be prosecuted once the investigations are completed.
Following the occurrence, Audu Garba Bosso, the Police Commissioner of the State Command, told the public that the matter would be investigated with the highest thoroughness and professionalism, and that anyone found guilty would face the full force of the law.
He noted that further updates on the situation would be conveyed in due time.
