Just hours after Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), the party’s national head, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, hosted a meeting with various Kwankwasiyya factions at his apartment on Miller Road in Kano.
The groups, chosen from various sections of the state, paid Kwankwaso a visit to reaffirm their commitment and pledge to continue supporting his political ideas.
Addressing the crowd, Kwankwaso urged young people and Kwankwasiyya movement members to be firm and principled, urging them not to be swayed by money or political pressure.
“Our presence here today is based on ideology,” the politician stated. “If we had allowed greed to guide us, we would have been bought with money long ago.”
Although Kwankwaso did not specifically reference Governor Yusuf or his departure from the NNPP, political experts feel his words were a covert response to the governor’s choice to leave the party.
Earlier on Friday, Governor Yusuf publicly announced his resignation from the NNPP, citing what he termed as ongoing internal party conflicts. The development was announced in a statement signed by his spokeswoman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, the governor resigned in a letter addressed to the NNPP chairman in his ward of Diso, Gwale Local Government Area, Kano State.
The twin occurrences have accelerated political realignments in Kano, with experts closely monitoring their implications for the state’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
