The Federal Government prohibits honorary degree recipients from using the prefix ‘Dr’ in official, academic, or professional situations.
Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, revealed this on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, while briefing State House media following a Federal Executive Council meeting.
According to him, “The recent trend in the awarding of honorary degrees has exposed an increasing abuse and politicisation of this academic prerogative.
18 + “We’ve seen awards being used for political patronage, for financial gain, as well as the conferral of awards on serving public officials, which, as part of the ethics of honorary degree awards, should not happen.”
Individuals who acquire honorary degrees will no longer be allowed to use the term ‘Dr’ before their names, according to the new guideline.
Instead, they must state the complete honorary designation following their names.
