The family of Nigeria’s first Head of State, Major General Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, has stated that their late father was a loyal soldier who dedicated his life to Nigeria’s unity and stability.
The family made the statement on Wednesday at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Cenotaph in Umuahia, during a wreath-laying ceremony commemorating Maj.-Gen. Ironsi’s death on the 60th anniversary.
The family, speaking through Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi, stated that the memorial event was a plea for healing, peaceful cooperation, and nation-building, rather than revisiting old wounds and disagreements.
According to her, Nigeria’s future should be based on justice, accountability, discipline, and the common benefit of its population.
“We have convened today to commemorate the 60th anniversary of his martyrdom while actively serving for Nigeria’s national benefit and unity.
“Today, we should not gather to reignite old disagreements or to highlight past divides. Rather, we unite to honour a life dedicated to preserving Nigeria’s unity and developing state institutions,” Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi stated.
She urged current and future leaders to prioritise national interests over sectional concerns, and to choose dialogue over confrontation.
President Bola Tinubu was represented at the wreath-laying ceremony by Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa (Rtd), while Governor Alex Otti and former Nigerian First Lady Patience Jonathan also laid the wreath.
