Amalau Samuel Amalau, the Chairman of Plateau State’s Bokkos Local Government Area, has announced the immediate halt of all mining activity, legal and illicit, in the council.
The decision came after a renewed wave of attacks on local miners, which resulted in the deaths of youths by gunmen suspected of being Fulani militia members.
Amalau, who made the decision in a statement he personally signed on Sunday, February 1, 2026, also imposed a daily curfew in the Tenti and Mandar districts of the LGA, which will last until further notice.
According to the statement, the moves were unavoidable and are part of measures taken inside the council to maintain peace, safety, and the protection of lives and property.
“Following the prevailing security challenges currently affecting parts of the Local Government, and after due consultations with relevant security agencies and stakeholders, I have approved the immediate suspension of all mining activities in Tenti and Mandar Districts until further notice,” according to the chairman.
He emphasised that the step was important to prevent activities that could exacerbate the already precarious security situation in the affected areas.
“Furthermore, to enhance security surveillance and enable security agencies to effectively discharge their duties, a daily curfew is hereby imposed from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. in Tenti and Mandar Districts, as well as along the surrounding terrain within Bokkos Local Government Council.”
Amalau asked all inhabitants, particularly miners, business operators, and tourists to the impacted areas, to strictly adhere to and comply with this direction, as anyone discovered breaching the suspension order or curfew will be dealt with in accordance with existing laws.
“I would want to appeal to the fine people of Bokkos Local Government Area to stay calm, watchful, and cooperate with security authorities as we work together to restore long-term peace and normalcy. “This directive takes immediate effect and will remain in effect until further notice,” he continued.
