Usman Bala, the spokesperson for the eight aspirants for Kano Central Senatorial District, has stated that their decision to withdraw in favour of former Kano State Governor Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau was the result of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s intervention and their deep respect for him.
Usman Bala said that all eight aspirants unanimously supported the governor’s peace proposal, praising it as a prudent and timely intervention that helped bring all competing factions together for a shared purpose.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who effectively addressed the ongoing controversy over the Kano Central Senatorial ticket, stated that the development has cleared the way for Shekarau to emerge as the consensus candidate.
The breakthrough came after Governor Yusuf called a high-level reconciliation meeting in Abuja, during which all aspirants and important stakeholders pledged to work together for Kano State’s unity, progress, and political future.
Following the Governor’s intervention, eight aspirants voluntarily withdrew their candidature and endorsed Senator Shekarau as the consensus flagbearer for Kano Central on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform.
Kano Central, Nigeria’s largest senatorial district, includes 15 local government areas with a population of more than 10 million people, making the agreement a significant political milestone with far-reaching consequences for the state and the country’s democratic process.
Governor Yusuf praised the hopefuls for prioritising the communal interest of the people over personal ambition. He characterised their decision as a brave display of maturity, sacrifice, and dedication to advancing democratic ideas.
The governor emphasised his administration’s commitment to further encouraging conversation, inclusion, and consensus-building as critical tools for political stability and long-term development.
He expressed optimism that the new agreement struck by all parties will further solidify unity and increase Kano’s political power on the national level.
In his reaction, Shekarau praised the governor’s efforts to promote long-term harmony among the aspirants.
He also extended his gratitude to the contenders for committing to assist him and other APC candidates in the best interests of the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
