In Effurun, Delta State, a suspect named Mene Ogidi was fatally shot. The Nigeria Police Force has denounced the incident.
Based on credible information received from Benin Motor Park along the Warri-Sapele Motorway, operatives assigned to the Effurun Area Command were dispatched to apprehend a suspect who had been caught by transport union members trying to waybill a package containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Team commander ASP Nuhu Usman killed the suspect by firing his weapon in flagrant disregard for existing norms as efforts were underway to lawfully apprehend him.
The officer and his team will be transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary measures and prosecution, according to a statement signed by DCP Anthony Okon, Force Public Relations Officer. This decision was made by the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
The statement went on to say that the Inspector-General of Police offers his deepest sympathies to the victim’s loved ones and promises that the law will be followed in the pursuit of justice.
He goes on to say that the public should keep their cool and follow the law while the disciplinary and judicial procedures unfold.
According to the statement, the Nigeria Police Force will not abide by any behaviour that compromises public trust, misuse of power, or extrajudicial actions.
