Veteran writer and former presidential aide, Dr. Reuben Abati, has implored President Bola Tinubu to maintain Vice President Kashim Shettima in anticipation of the 2027 general election, stressing that the President should uphold his selection of running mate.
During an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Tuesday, Abati stated that the recent remarks made by the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, on the political ramifications of altering the Vice Presidency were neither disrespectful nor inappropriate.
He observed that Musawa accurately indicated that modifying the ticket could influence political dynamics in the North, especially among Kanuri and Hausa-Fulani constituents.
He asserts that Nigeria’s political decisions should be made by Nigerians, free from the influence of foreign political leaders, emphasising that President Tinubu must demonstrate courage and consistency in his selections.
Abati stated: “Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, exhibited remarkable courage by asserting that altering the Vice President would alter the dynamics due to the coercion from the Christian community, which would have profound implications in the politically astute northern region.”
“She may have stated that without a Kanuri, the equation for 2027 lacks a Hausa-Fulani or Hausa individual, indicating that the APC will encounter difficulties.”
“In my opinion, nothing she has articulated is offensive.” I stated that yesterday. I reiterate that statement. She stated that there is no hostility towards the opposition, as their presence is essential.
The APC leadership appears to be misunderstanding the issue at hand. Felix Morka (APC National Publicity Secretary) should be reminded that there has been a persistent effort to minimise the significance of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket — the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
I have urged President Tinubu to demonstrate the fortitude to uphold his decision. He upheld that decision in 2023 and should reaffirm it in 2027. The ongoing discourse around Donald Trump reiterates that he will not determine the political preferences of Nigerians.
