The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, recently uploaded candidates to its portal ahead of the 2027 general elections, sparking a new crisis in the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, with two aspirants vying for the party’s candidature for the same elective position in Edo State.
NEC has put a photograph of Hon. Sunny Aguebor, the party’s candidate for Edo South Senatorial District, to its portal.
The electoral commission was also said to have uploaded the details of another candidate, Mrs Epelle-Asemota Beigiditte Osayuki, with Hon. Aguebor’s photo.
According to The Daily Post, the development has caused consternation among party members and supporters, as well as the two hopefuls.
It was learned that the development has further placed both hopefuls against each other for the party’s senatorial ticket, raising suspicions over who is the genuine NDC candidate for Edo South.
When contacted, Hon. Aguebor asserted that he was the party’s only real candidate for the Edo South senatorial election.
Aguebor, who described the discrepancy as an anomaly, suggested possible mischief or an error in uploading the candidate’s information.
He insisted that the party’s position on its candidate was clear, and that the placement of another aspirant’s name and details alongside his photograph on the INEC portal did not change his standing as the party’s candidate.
Mrs Asemota, whose name and contact information appeared on the paper posted to the commission’s portal, stated that the problem had already been handled by the proper authorities.
According to her, “I am not really disposed to make comments on it right now because the party is handling it and so is INEC.” “I’ll leave it at that.”
