The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that the enforcement action was initiated due to reports indicating that the facility was discharging untreated waste via a pumping machine, in addition to neglected wastewater spillages from a clogged sewage chamber, resulting in unpleasant odors and environmental disturbances in the vicinity.

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, closed Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island due to the indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into the public drainage system via a pumping machine and unattended wastewater spillage from a blocked sewage chamber, resulting in public nuisance and unpleasant odors, according to the statement.

The agency also closed Foodies Restaurant at No. 32B, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase I, Eti-Osa, Lagos, for releasing untreated wastewater into public drains.

Officials indicated that the wastewater comprised substantial accumulations of fat and oil, obstructing drainage systems and resulting in pollution, unpleasant odors, and environmental disruption, despite several warnings provided to the facility.

The Lagos State Government emphasized the necessity for households and property managers to adhere rigorously to sanctioned wastewater disposal procedures.

It cautioned that persons or organizations discovered in violation of environmental rules would incur suitable penalties, including potential prosecution, in accordance with current regulations.
