The Lagos State incident and Rescue Service has begun an inquiry into the incident that broke out at the Bono Energy Terminal in Apapa’s Coconut neighbourhood.
Shakiru Amodu, the agency’s spokesperson, had previously acknowledged the occurrence in a brief statement released on Friday.
Margaret Adeseye, Controller General of the LSFRS, confirmed that the fire was successfully extinguished about 2 p.m. According to her, the fire involved a five-million-litre Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) storage tank that exploded in flames about noon.
Adeseye added that emergency personnel were swiftly dispatched to the area following the distress call, and that the coordinated action prevented the issue from worsening, with no casualties reported.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service successfully contained and extinguished a fire outbreak involving a storage tank at the Bono Energy Terminal situated within the Ibru Jetty Complex along the Apapa-Oworonshoki Motorway near Coconut Bus Stop, Olodi Apapa,” she stated.
The emergency was reported around 12:04 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 2026. Firefighters from Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu, and Isolo fire stations responded, arriving about 12:16 p.m.”The incident involved a five-million-litre AGO storage tank that was engulfed by fire,” she explained.
Adeseye reported that firefighters and rescue teams from nearby oil and gas companies responded quickly and extinguished the fire at 1:54 p.m. The prompt intervention prevented the flames from spreading to nearby storage tanks and vital infrastructure within the complex.
“Through coordinated and professional firefighting operations, the fire was successfully contained, preventing a larger industrial disaster and reducing the magnitude of potential losses.” “Fortunately, no casualties were reported,” she said.
The LSFRS boss went on to say that the actual cause of the fire had yet to be determined, and that investigations were ongoing.
The incident occurred just hours after another emergency situation involving a leaking Liquefied Petroleum Gas tanker was successfully contained at Owode Elede in Onirin along Ikorodu Road.
