Nigerians have voiced their discontent with President Bola Tinubu’s choice to address the people of Plateau State from the departure lounge of the Yakubu Gowon Airport in Hyeipang.
The airport is just a 40-minute drive from Jos, the state’s capital, where the incident occurred.
Tinubu was in the state following the terrible incident, which killed 28 people and injured 22.
On Thursday evening, the president came at the airport to meet with stakeholders and some of the attack’s victims.
Although Tinubu stated that his government will do all possible to help the victims and restore tranquillity in Jos, Nigerians were disappointed by his refusal to enter the city and inspect the situation firsthand.
Tinubu also appeared to be in a hurry to leave for Lagos, where he will spend the Easter holidays, adding, “There is no light at the airport, and I have to fly back within the next 10 minutes.”
“To the victims, there’s nothing I can give you but promise you this experience will not repeat itself.”
Ridwan Oke, a lawyer with the handle @RidwanuLlah on X, wrote: “The President has no business flying to Jos if he is going to turn around at the airport.
“If it were a campaign, he would go into the nooks and crannies of that state to get votes.
“Lives were lost, citizens are terrified, and all you could do was give a consolation speech at the airport?
“Even the family who had recently lost their loved ones dressed up to meet him. “A waste of everyone’s time.”
