Olatunji Disu, the Inspector-General of Police, has directed personnel involved in a viral stop-and-search video in Lagos to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action.
The decision was announced on Sunday by Aliyu Giwa, the Force Public Relations Officer, in a statement posted to his official X Twitter.
According to Giwa, the officers involved in the incident, which reportedly occurred in Lagos’ Satellite Town district, have been asked to appear before authorities on Wednesday to answer questions about their actions.
The action followed public uproar sparked by a viral video circulating on social media of officers allegedly harassing individuals during a highway stop-and-search operation.
In the video, officers were seen intercepting a vehicle, directing everyone to out, then isolating one person for a search away from the vehicle.
The footage, which appeared on Saturday, was shared by a user named @ChuksEricE.
Giwa remarked that the directive demonstrates the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to accountability and professional conduct.
He asked officers to maintain discipline, moderation, and respect residents’ rights while performing their duty.
“The Nigeria Police Force values the concerns of the public, which continue to reinforce our commitment to accountability and professional standards,” he said.
He also informed Nigerians that the Force is committed to maintaining discipline, justice, and institutional integrity, and that appropriate punishments would be imposed depending on the results of the disciplinary process.
