Uyo indigenes advocate for the allocation of the State Assembly seat to the Offot Ukwa tribe

The Uyo Liberation Movement (ULM), a socio-political organization in Akwa Ibom State, has called for political parties to allocate the Uyo State Constituency seat to the Offot Ukwa Clan, enabling the clan to nominate the representative for Uyo in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in 2027.

ULM issued a 13-point communiqué co-signed by the group’s President, Barr. Udeme Ekott, and Secretary General, Elder Emmanuel Sam, on May 17, 2026, in Uyo.

The group condemned the efforts of specific individuals to undermine the current zoning arrangement in Uyo, which has maintained calm in the local government area since the restoration of democracy in 1999.

A section of the communiqué stated: “The Uyo Liberation Movement (ULM) was established to provide a neutral, independent, and robust voice to advocate for the interests of Uyo Local Government and its constituents in anticipation of the 2027 election.”

“ULM has noted the intentional efforts by specific individuals, who harbour ill intentions towards Uyo, to undermine the established zoning formula for the Uyo House of Assembly seat, which has promoted peace and unity among the populace since the reestablishment of democracy in 1999.”

The group, in its communiqué, asserted that it is Offot Clan’s turn to nominate the lawmaker for Uyo in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly for the 2027 election, expressing discontent with the current representative’s inability to provide effective representation for his constituents, and therefore, he should not be permitted to seek re-election in 2027.

“ULM asserts unequivocally that the Offot Ukwa Clan possesses the entitlement to nominate the subsequent House of Assembly representative for Uyo State Constituency in 2027, given that Uyo has adhered to a one-term policy in the House of Assembly.”

“ULM vehemently opposes the proposal to disadvantage Uyo by granting a non-performing representative a second term, which would regress the local government and disrupt the longstanding political cohesion among the populace.”

“ULM asserts that granting a second term to a representative deemed unqualified by the authorities for a principal position in the State Assembly would constitute a total waste of another four years, unless the intention is to embarrass Uyo,” the communiqué further noted.

The Uyo Liberation Movement urged the members of the Offot Ukwa Clan to participate in the 2027 election and expressed a willingness to collaborate with any political party that allocates the Uyo State Constituency party ticket to the Offot Ukwa Clan.

“ULM anticipates a detrimental outcome for Uyo if an underperforming representative is granted a second term to perpetuate his inadequate performance while simultaneously failing to obtain the role of Deputy Speaker in the forthcoming Assembly.”

“ULM is non-partisan but is prepared to collaborate with any political party or parties that are committed to promoting justice and fairness by nominating a House of Assembly candidate from Offot Ukwa Clan.”

“We urge all members of the Offot Ukwa Clan who possess the requisite qualifications to contest for the House of Assembly to do so with confidence in any political party and to resist intimidation.”

ULM, in its communiqué, reminded the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State that the residents of Uyo are not strangers to opposition politics and will readily collaborate with any political party that safeguards the collective interests of the populace.

“ULM seeks to remind the ruling party that the residents of Uyo are not unfamiliar with opposition politics and will assertively express their stance at the polls in 2027, akin to their declaration in 2011.” Uyo Local Government Area is the center of authority, and we merit improvement,” ULM stated in its communiqué.
