Warri South-West local government leader Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo has urged for a nonviolent end to the dispute over the Warri Federal Constituency’s boundary, which was imposed by the Supreme Court.
His statement comes after thirteen flow stations in Gbaramatu Kingdom were shut down on June 8th by protesting Ijaw women.
The request was made by Ekpemupolo in a statement that was distributed to reporters in Warri.
It has been known for all time that the Ijaw people are peaceful, and that they must not stray from their traditions, he said.
We must ensure that the current political crisis, which has arisen due to INEC’s refusal to finish delineating the wards in the Warri Federal Constituency, does not escalate into bloodshed.
“No matter what, I am requesting that you remain calm. In order to help us figure out what to do next, I’m also requesting that all of the community leaders get together right now.
He firmly believes that everyone should work together to find a peaceful solution to the current deadlock.
INEC needs to make a conscience decision and bring peace back to Warri and the surrounding areas.
“The people of Warri, whether they are Ijaw, Itsekiri, or Urhobo, are urged to remain calm and persistent as they await INEC’s just decision.”
On Monday, indigenous Ijaw women in the Gbaramatu enclave protested and shut off the flow stations run by an oil corporation.
Staying put in the facility till INEC follows the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Warri Federal Constituency’s ward and polling unit delineation is their solemn promise.
